Meistens steht der Schuhschnabel fast unbeweglich am Ufer.
Man könnte meinen, er sei ausgestopft.
Most of the time, the shoebill stands almost motionless on the shore.
You might think it’s stuffed.
Doch plötzlich stößt er blitzschnell zu. Wasser stobt zu allen Seiten.
Ein kurzer Ruck und der zappelnde Fisch verschwindet in seinem imposanten Schnabel.
But suddenly it thrusts into the water. It spurts on all sides.
A short jerk and the fidgeting fish disappears in his imposing beak.
Steckbrief Schuhschnabel (Balaeniceps rex)
– kann vereinzelt bis 150 cm groß werden
– in der Vogelwelt einzigartig geformter Schnabel, namensgebend
– Einzelgänger
– kann in Gefangenschaft bis 30 Jahre alt werden
– zwei bis drei Jungen, aber meist überlebt nur das Erstgeborene
– Der Bestand ist gefährdet. Der Hauptgrund ist seine Lebensraumzerstörung durch Trockenlegung der Sümpfe
– Es gibt nur noch 5.000 bis 8.000 freilebende Individuen, die meisten davon im Südsudan

– can be in captivity until 30 years old

– The stock is endangered. The main reason is its habitat destruction by draining the swamps

Na ja, wie man so halt ausschaut, ein wenig müde mit einem dicken Schnabel zwischen den Federn 🙂 Bis auf den Schuhschnabel, sein Blick ist sehr konzentriert. Und als der sich auf einmal so blitzschnell bewegte, wackelte ich vor Schreck mit der Kamera 😉

I really like all of these photos a lot, Simone, but the shoebill is really special. I know people who have designed their entire journey around searching for the shoebill. So rare, and so uniquely gorgeous.

Thank you Jet! Yes, it’s a unique bird and it was a lot of fun for me to watch the shoebill hunting. I’m lucky that the world bird park near Hannover has so much beautiful birds. You can get very close to the animals and often you can see the special behaviour, because they feeling good. Thank you for stopping by!
