It came all alone from Asia to my garden 😉 and delights me every year:  Pokeweed (Phytolacca acinosa). The poisonous plant with lush green leaves is about one to two meters high. But the true interesting thing of this beauty are its decorative inflorescences.

Aus den vielen kleinen rosageränderten weißen Blütchen entwickeln sich die bei Vögeln heiß begehrten Beeren. Mit zunehmenden Reifegrad von Grün zu einem kräftigen Dunkelrot bis Violett nimmt deren Giftigkeit ab. Das gilt aber nicht für die Samen.

From the many small pink-flowered white flowers develop the berries, which are highly coveted by birds. As the degree of maturity increases from green to a strong dark red to violet, its toxicity decreases. This does not apply to the seeds. The Kermes berries contain the dye Betacyane, which was formerly used to dye clothes.

Es gibt viele Phytolacca-Arten, darunter auch die sehr giftige Amerikanische Kermesbeere (Phytolacca americana) mit hängenden Blütenständen. Alle Kermesbeeren enthalten den Farbstoff Betacyane, der früher zum Färben von Kleidung genutzt wurde. An ihr zusagenden Standorten verbreitet sich die Kermesbeere rasend schnell und kann zur Plage werden.

There are many Phytolacca species, including the very poisonous American Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) with hanging inflorescences. All Kermes berries contain the dye Betacyane, which was formerly used for dyeing clothes. Phytolacca spreads out very quickly and can become a plague, if it likes the location.
