Nach vier Wochen Fahrt quer durch Neuseeland und vielen Wanderungen war mein Kopf voll von Eindrücken und mein Körper erschöpft. Ich brauchte eine Pause. Und in der kleinen und friedlichen Stadt Waikawa in den Catlins fand ich genau das, wonach ich suchte. Einen wundervollen Ort zum Entspannen!…

After four weeks drive across New Zealand and a lot of hikes my head was full of impressions and my body was exhausted. I needed a rest. And in this little and peaceful town Waikawa in the Catlins I found exactly what I was looking for. A wounderful place to relax.

Waikawa ist eine alte Fischersiedlung im Southland (Südinsel von Neuseeland) nahe der Curio Bay, in der man den seltenen Gelbaugenpinguin findet. Die Umgebung ist wirklich ein Naturparadies mit lieblichen grünen Hügeln und einer vielfältigen Küste.

Hier stehen auch viele der aus Kalifornien stammenden Macrocarpa Bäume (Cupressus macrocarpa). Ihr gebeugter Wuchs zeugt von den kräftigen Winden, den Roaring Forties, die von Westen über Neuseeland hinweg fegen.

Waikawa is an old fishing settlement in the Southland (South Island of New Zealand) close to Curio Bay, where the rare yellow-eyed penguin can be found. The environment is really a nature paradise with lovely green hills and a gorgeous coast.

Here you can find the macrocarpas (Cupressus macrocarpa) coming from California. Their stooped growth testifies from the strong westerly winds, the Roaring Forties, which sweep over New Zealand away.

Am Abend lief ich an der Waikawa Bay entlang. Mit Glück kann man dort den endemischen Hector-Delfin bei Hochwasser beobachten. Ich war zu spät da, aber dafür konnte ich andere Schönheiten am Wasser entdecken.  🙂

In the evening I walked along the Waikawa Bay. With luck you can watch there the endemic Hector’s Dolphins at high tide. I was too late, but I was able to discover other beauties at the water. 🙂

Die grauen Wolken hatten die Landschaft den Tag über in sanftes Licht gehüllt. Doch spät am Abend fand die untergehende Sonne ihren Weg und ließ die Hügel am Horizont hell erstrahlen. Nur wenige Minuten, dann verblassten die Farben in der Dunkelheit.

During the day the grey clouds had wrapped the scenery in gentle light. However, late in the evening the setting sun found her way and let the hills in the horizon shine brightly. Only few minutes, then the colours faded in the darkness.

Und selbst der Regen, der mich nächsten Morgen weckte, war an diesem friedvollen Ort so entspannend, dass ich ihm den halben Tag vom Bett aus zusah.

And even the rain which woke me up the next morning was so relaxing at this peaceful place, that I watched him half a day from the bed.
