Ein Schild gibt Auskunft:
Ganz lapidar ausgedrückt soll es daran liegen, dass zwischen den einzelnen Farben die Chemie einfach nicht stimmt!
The dunes, still humidified by the downpour, shine colourful as the burning tropical sun has driven away the thick clouds. Red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow. These are the seven colours in the Seven Coloured Earth Geopark of Mauritius, a geological landmark near the small town of Chamarel. Curious: No matter how often it rains, the colours do not mix. Why?

To put it succinctly, the reason is that the chemistry between the individual colours is just not right!
Mauritius ist vulkanischen Ursprungs. Vor 3,5 bis 1,7 Millionen von Jahren bildete sich bei Lavaausbrüchen aus dem hervorquellenden Magma Basalt, ein dunkelgraues bis schwarzes Urgestein der Erde. Unter feuchtwarmen Bedingungen fanden bis heute tiefgreifende Zersetzungsprozesse statt. Aus dem Basalt entstand Lehm, der reich an Eisen- und Aluminiumoxiden ist.
Das Eisenoxid hat den Boden mit Farbtönen von Rot bis Braun gefärbt. Das Aluminiumoxid sorgt für die Farbtöne von Blau bis Violettblau. Eisen- und Aluminiumpartikel reagieren abweisend miteinander. Und das soll für die konsequente Trennung der farbigen Sandstreifen verantwortlich sein.
Mauritius is of volcanic origin. 3.5 to 1.7 million years ago, basalt, a dark grey to black primary rock of the earth, was formed during lava eruptions from the swelling magma. Under warm and humid conditions, deep decomposition processes have taken place to this day. Clay, rich in iron and aluminium oxides, was formed from the basalt.
The iron oxide has coloured the soil with shades ranging from red to brown. The aluminium oxide provides the colours from blue to violet blue. Iron and aluminium particles react with each other in a repellent way. And this is supposed to be responsible for the consistent separation of the coloured sand strips.
Wer Pech hat und der Himmel ist beim Besuch des privaten Geoparks bedeckt, wird die bunten Farben leider nur erahnen können. Dann bieten aber die welligen Muster der Dünen ein interessanten Kontrast, insbesondere in schwarzweiss. Entstanden sind die Formen übrigens als Folge von Wassererosion durch Regen.
Those who are unlucky and the sky is covered when visiting the private geopark will unfortunately only be able to guess the bright colours. But then the wavy patterns of the dunes offer an interesting contrast, especially in black and white. By the way, the shapes are the result of water erosion caused by rain.

Das würde ich auch gerne wissen. 😊Leider darf man die Dünen nicht betreten. Und ehrlich gesagt, bin ich von der Aussage auf dem Schild nicht gänzlich überzeugt, daher meine zurückhaltende Wortwahl im Text. Es gibt auch noch andere, weitergehende Meinungen von Experten zu der Thematik. Aber wie auch immer, kurios und genial bleibt es!

Es ist toll, diese Farbenpalette zu sehen, aber das Schwarz-Weiß-Bild finde ich auch wunderschön. Da ich mit Geologie nicht so viel am Hut habe, kann ich auch einfach die Aussicht genießen, ohne über die Prozesse Bescheid zu wissen, oder? 🙂
