„Wenn du das Wetter nicht magst, warte fünf Minuten!“ Oder mit anderen Worten: „Schottland hat vier Jahreszeiten an einem Tag.“ Ja, da ist etwas dran. Also wartete ich nicht in meinem Wigwam bei Kilmuir bis es aufhörte zu regnen, sondern packte meine Sachen und fuhr los.
Ich wollte die Küste erkunden, denn die Trotternish Halbinsel im Norden der Isle of Skye bietet einige markante Landschaften mit ungewöhnlichen Felsformationen. Zwei der berühmtesten Sehenswürdigkeiten sind der Old Man of Storr und der Quiraing. Ich hatte vor, beiden einen Besuch abstatten, um von ihren Gipfeln aus die Aussicht zu genießen. Wenn denn das Wetter mitspielt…
“If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes!“ Or in other words: „Scotland has four seasons in a day.“ Yes, there is something to this. So I did not wait in my Wigwam at Kilmuir for it to stop raining, packed my things and drove off.
I wanted to explore the coastline, because the Trotternish Peninsula in the north of the Isle of Skye contains some striking landscapes with unusual rock formations. Two of the most famous landmarks are the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing. I planned to visit both of them and enjoy the view from their summits. If the weather plays along…
Und wie so oft hatten die Schotten Recht. Als ich in Staffin an der Ostseite von Trotternish ankam, riss die Wolkendecke auf und kurz darauf war der Himmel blau. Beste Gelegenheit, den Quiraing Loop zu wandern, dessen Startpunkt in der Nähe des Dorfes direkt an der Straße ist.
Der 543 Meter hohe Quiraing wurde durch einen massiven Erdrutsch geschaffen und ist Teil der Trotternish Ridge, einem der eindruckvollsten Höhenzüge Großbritanniens. Auf dem fast sieben Kilometer langen Rundwanderweg trifft man nicht ohne Grund auf Namen wie the Needle, the Prison und the Table. Sie sind Ausdrücke für diese erstaunliche Felsformation aus hohen Klippen, bizarren Felsnadeln, Plateaus und kleinen Seen.
And as so often, the Scots were right. When I arrived in Staffin at the east side of Trotternish, the cloud cover tore open and shortly afterwords the sky was blue. Best opportunity to hike the Quiraing loop which starting point is right at the road near the village.
The 543 meter high Quiraing was created by a massive landslide and is part of the Trotternish ridge, one of the most beautiful and impressive mountain ranges in the UK. It’s not without reason that you find names like the Needle, the Prison and the Table on the almost seven-kilometer circular trail. They are names for this amazing rock formation of high cliffs, bizarre pinnacles, plateaus and small lakes.
Ohne Stopps braucht man für die Wanderung gut zwei Stunden. Aber wer will in dieser grandiosen Landschaft, in der Filme gedreht wurden wie Macbeth (mit Michael Fassbender), 47 Ronin (mit Keanu Reeves) oder Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, keine Pause machen wollen?!
Nun ja, ich habe an diesen Tag noch nicht mal den ganzen Loop geschafft, ich bin zu spät losgewandert. Aber dafür durfte ich etwas ganz Beeindruckendes erleben.
Without stops you need around two hours. But who does not want to take a break in this magnificent landscape, in which films were filmed like Macbeth (with Michael Fassbender), 47 Ronin (with Keanu Reeves) or Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword?!
Well, I have not even made the loop that day, it was too late. But for that I was able to experience something very impressive.
Nach dem letzten steilen Aufstieg genoss ich auf der mit Gras bewachsenen Klippe den herrlichen Blick auf die Staffin Bay. Plötzlich kamen wie aus dem Nichts große weiße Wolken vom Meer heran gezogen und stiegen die Felsen hinauf. Dann ging alles sehr schnell. Innerhalb von Sekunden umhüllte mich eine weiße Wand, die Sonne verschwand und ich konnte keinen Meter mehr weit sehen.
After the last steep climb I stood on the grassy edge of the cliff and enjoyed the wonderful view of the Staffin Bay. Suddenly out of nowhere white big clouds came up from the sea and rose up the rocks. Then everything went very fast. In seconds a white wall enveloped me, the sun disappeared and I did not see a meter more far.
Wow, was für ein Gefühl!
Plötzlich wurde mir deutlich bewusst, warum die Leute immer eindringlich gewarnt werden, nicht ohne Kompass oder GPS in den Schottischen Highlands zu wandern. Und wenn Du dann stundenlang auf den Wetterwechsel hoffst, wird es mehr als unangenehm. Ich dagegen musste nur fünf Minuten warten. Dann zogen die Wolken weiter und der Spuk war vorbei. Die Sonne schien über dem leuchtend grünen Gras, so als wäre nichts geschehen.

Suddenly I realized why people are always warned not to walk in the Scottish Highlands without a compass or GPS. And if you hope for hours on the weather change, it will be more than uncomfortable. But I only had to wait five minutes, then the clouds moved on and the spook was over. The sun was shining over the bright green grass, as if nothing had happened.
Übrigens, auf dem Bild oben könnt Ihr einen winzigen kleinen roten Punkt oben rechts auf der Klippe sehen. Das ist ein Wanderer. Unter ihm befindet sich der Quiraing Loop.
Ich blieb noch einige Zeit auf dem Kamm sitzen, tief beeindruckt von der Landschaft und dem Naturschauspiel, das ich erleben durfte. Dann trat ich langsam den Heimweg an. Ich nahm denselben Pfad zum Auto zurück und kam wieder an dem kleinen See vorbei, in dem sich nun der Abendhimmel spiegelte. Ein schöner Abschluss für einen unvergesslichen Tag!
By the way, in the picture above you can see a tiny little red point top right on the cliff. This is a hiker.
I stayed on the ridge for a while, deeply impressed by the landscape and natural spectacle that I was allowed to experience. Then I slowly started on the way home. I took the same path back to the car and passed again the small lake, in which now the evening sky was reflected. A nice ending to a unforgettable day!

One reason that I loved your post was that Nigel and I have read a book by the classic Scottish author John Buchan called „Mr Standfast“ and part of this dramatic story is set in the Quiraing. Ja, ein Segen! Bisschen unheimlich war das Ganze schon. Aber ich nehme meine Tracks immer auf und so wäre ich schon irgendwie den Berg wieder runtergekommen! Hätte sicher ne Ecke länger gedauert! 🙂

Ja, unbedingt. Man kommt sich manchmal wie auf einem anderen Stern vor. Nicht umsonst sind so einige Filme auf Skye gedreht worden. Echt toll dort! Und Vögel gibt’s natürlich auch 🙂

Wunderschöne Bilder liebe Simone mit einer unterhaltsamen Geschichte dazu. Manchmal erleben wir diese dichten Nebel auch hier an der Nordsee , z.B. in Wremen – manchmal – und dann ist es auch sehr beeindruckend, wenn man es erleben darf.

Den Old man of Storr wollte ich auch erwandern. Leider war im Tal das Wetter gut nur etwas weiter oben stürmte es dann schrecklich. Kaum kam man aus dem Windschatten riss eine Böhe meine Begleiterin um, die voller Matsch lieber zurück wollte als weiter zu gehen. Ich ärgere mich bis heute, dass ich es nur fast geschafft hatte.

Ja, ich kann die Enttäuschung verstehen. Dennoch, Eure Sicherheit ging vor! Außerdem ist es doch ein guter Grund, noch einmal dorthin zu reisen!

Das nächste mal ist nah. Nächstes Jahr wenn alles klappt werde ich per Anhalter und Wanderschuh‘ von Edinburgh bis Dunnet Head trampen.
