Kannst Du Dir einen Strand ohne Möwen vorstellen? Du gehst am Ufer, schaust in den Himmel, aber er ist leer. Da ist nichts. Es ist ruhig. Du hörst keinen einzigen Schrei. Im Sand vor Dir läuft kein Vogel. Kein Augenpaar verfolgt ganz genau jeden einzelnen Schritt von Dir, geduldig darauf wartend, dass Du ein Stückchen Brot verlierst. Es ist schwer vorstellbar, oder?…

Can you imagine a beach without gulls? You walk on the coastline, look in the sky, but he is empty. There’s nothing. It’s quiet. You can’t hear a single shriek. In the sand no bird ist walking in front of your feet. No pair of eyes followed attentively every step of you and waiting that you lose a piece of your bread. This is not as easy to imagine, right?

Ein Meer ohne Möwen ist wie ein Meer ohne Wellen. Beides gehört einfach untrennbar zusammen. Aber als ich diesen Artikel schrieb, dachte ich darüber nach, dass es vielleicht so sein könnte. Warum? Ich will es kurz erklären.

A sea without gulls is like a sea without waves. They belongs inseparable together. But when I’ve written this article I thought about it that it might be so. Let me explain why.

Auf meinem Weg zu den Moeraki boulders hielt ich am Shag Point, an dem sich eine Robbenkolonie auf den plateauähnlichen Felsen die Sonne auf ihren Pelz scheinen ließ. Es machte Spaß den Tieren beim Herumtollen und Spielen zuzusehen. Aber leider konnte ich nur wenige Bilder machen. Es war an diesem Tag so windig an den Aussichtpunkten, dass ich meine Kamera kaum gerade halten konnte.

On my way to the Moeraki boulders I stopped at Shag Point to visited a colony of seals which lay there on the flat rock platforms. It was very funny to watch the animals how they romped around and played together. But unfortunately I could only make a few pictures of them.

Nach einer Weile entschied ich zu gehen und ein Stück die Küste lang zulaufen. Der Weg führte hinab zu einer geschützten Bucht. Endlich kein Wind mehr! Glücklich setzte ich mich auf die großen Steine am Ufer.
On the lookouts it was very windy and I couldn’t hardly hold my camera without shaking. After a while I decided to go along the coastline. The way led down to a little sheltered bay. Finally, no wind! I was happy and sat down on the rocks.

Vor mir im Wasser landete eine wunderschöne Möwe mit rotem Schnabel und roten Beinen. Ein wenig skeptisch blickte sie mich an, planschte dann aber genussvoll los. Sie gehörte zu einer kleinen Kolonie von Rotschnabelmöwen (Larus novaehollandiae scopulinus), die an den Felsen ihre Jungen groß gezogen hatte.

In front of me a beautiful looking gull with a red beak and red legs landed in the water. At first the bird looked a little bit sceptical, but then it took a bath enjoyable. The gull belonged to a small nesting colony of red-billed gulls (Larus novaehollandiae scopulinus) along the cliffs of Shag Point.

Die neuseeländische Naturschutzbehörde hat die Rotschnabelmöwe als „National gefährdet“ eingestuft, obwohl es noch rund 100.000 Vögel gibt. Aber ihre Zahl ist in den letzten 20 Jahren dramatisch zurückgegangen und wird die nächsten 30 Jahre noch bis zu 70% weiter fallen.

The Department of Conservation of New Zealand categorises the species as „Nationally Vulnerable“, despite the seemingly high number of 100.000 birds. But their number has decreased in the last 20 years rapidly and a further decline of up to 70 per cent the next 30 years is expected!

Noch düsterer sieht es um eine weitere gefährdete Möwe aus, die Maorimöwe (Larus bulleri). Sie ist ein wenig zierlicher als die Rotschnabelmöwe und hat einen schwarzen Schnabel und schwarze Beine. Die Maorimöwe ist wie der Gelbaugenpinguin endemisch in Neuseeland. Sie ist der gefährdetste Seevogel der Welt, Status „National kritisch“!

Even worse is the situation of another endangered seagull in New Zealand, the black-billed gull (Larus bulleri). It’s a little bit smaller than the red-billed gull and has a black beak and black legs. The seagull is like the yellow-eyed penguin endemic in New Zealand. It’s the most endangered seabird in the world! Therfore, the conservation status is „Nationally critical“.

Möwen, die vom Aussterben bedroht sind! Das ist irgendwie kaum zu glauben. Aber was sind die Gründe? Ganz genau, weiß das niemand. Eine Vielzahl von Faktoren spielen eine Rolle. Räuber wie Ratten, Katzen, Hermeline und Frettchen, menschliche Aktivitäten, die den Lebensraum zerstören, aber auch der globale Klimawandel. So reduziert das immer wärmer werdende Wasser das verfügbare Nahrungsangebot wie z.B. Krill.

Seagulls which are threatened. It’s really hardly to believe. But what are the reasons? Exactly one does not know it. There are many impacts which play a role: Predators like rats, cats, stoats and ferrets, human activities that destroy habitats, but also the global climate change. The warmer water reduces the available food in the ocean like krill.

Es war herrlich, diese wunderbaren Vögel zu beobachten und eine Weile an ihrem Leben in der Kolonie teilzuhaben. Ein ziemlich hartes Leben, denn die Vögel waren sehr laut und aggressiv. Die kleinen Jungmöwen hatten wirklich nicht viel zu lachen. Immer und immer wieder attackierten die Altvögel sie mit ihren spitzen roten Schnäbeln. Ich konnte mir nicht erklären warum.

It was a pleasure for me to watch those wonderful birds and took part of their life in colony for a while. A fairly hard life, because the seagulls were very noisy and aggressive. The chicks had nothing to lough about. Over and over again the adults attacked the little ones with their painted red beak from the air. I could not fathom why.

Das Beste für die Jungen war die Flucht ins Wasser und schnellstens Fliegen lernen!

Anyway, the best way for the chicks was to escape into the water and learn to fly quickly.

Sie genossen sichtlich den Wind nahe der Wasseroberfläche. Doch nur solange bis die Eltern mit Futter zurückkehrten. Unglaublich wie schnell die Kleinen wieder auf den Felsen waren!

They enjoyed the wind in their wings close to the water surface till the moment the adults came back with food. Unbelievable how fast the chicks got back to the rocks!

Auf einmal flogen die Vögel mit gewaltigem Geschrei auf und ihre weißen Körper und grauen Flügel füllten den gesamten Himmel. Ist das nicht ein toller Anblick?
Lasst uns hoffen, niemals einen leeren Himmel über dem Meer erleben zu müssen!

Suddenly the birds flew on and filled the sky with their white bodies and gray wings. Is that not a beautiful sight?
Let us hope, that the day of an empty sky over the ocean will never come!

Ich finde, besonders Inseln wie Neuseeland verdeutlichen, dass alles in der Welt miteinander zusammen hängt. Vor allem die Erderwärmung und der Klimawandel sind ein großes Problem. Die Natur braucht unseren Schutz und wir brauchen die Natur. Nichts ist unverwundbar und alles kann auf einmal verschwinden.
Ich bin an jenem Tag sehr nachdenklich vom Shag Point weggefahren, doch dankbar diese beeindruckenden Momente purer Natur erleben zu dürfen.

I think, especially islands like New Zealand show that on earth everything stands with each other in connection. The Global warming and the climate change are really big issues. The nature needs our protection and we needs the nature. Nothing is invulnerable and everything can be gone at once.
I left Shag Point very thoughtfully that day, but happy for those nice moments close to pure nature which I could experience.
