Spitze Freudenschreie übertönten das starke Rauschen des herabfallenden Wassers. Das Heck der Mitre Peak lag nun genau vor dem Wasserfall. Nackte Arme bewaffnet mit weißen Bechern streckten sich dem kühlen Nass entgegen. „Try to catch the water!“ Doch keine Chance! In hohem Bogen sprang das Wasser aus dem Gefäß, kaum dass es dessen Boden berührte…

Shouts of joy drowned the strong sound of the falling water. The rear of Mitre Peak was now right in front of the waterfall. Naked arms with white mugs stretched themselves against the cool water. „Try to catch the water!“ But no chance! In high curve the water jumped out of the vessel, hardly that it touched his ground.

Wir waren am Stirling Wasserfall, der neben Lady Bowen zu den ganzjährigen Wasserfällen gehört, die in den Milford Sound fließen. Nach Regen – und das kommt im regenreichen Fiordland der Südinsel von Neuseeland an 200 Tagen im Jahr vor – sind es hunderte.

We were at the Stirling Falls. Besides Lady Bowen it belongs to year-round waterfalls that flow into the Milford Sound. After rain – so in the rainy Fiordland of the South Island of New Zealand on 200 days in the year – there are hundreds.

Gerne hätte ich dieses Schauspiel erlebt, doch ich war an einem der übrigen 165 Tage da. 🙂 Ein strahlend blauer Himmel mit einer leichten Brise begleitete mich auf meiner Rundfahrt durch den Milford Sound, eines der Hauptattraktionen Neuseelands.

Die kleine Mitre Peak, benannt nach einem der Berge am Sound, steuert das Unterwasser-Observatorium nicht an. Stattdessen fährt sie als einzige von den Ausflugsschiffen weit in Richtung Meer hinaus. Dort, wo die Delfine aus purer Lebenslust aus dem blauen Wasser springen und in der Luft ihre Pirouetten drehen.

I wish I had seen this spectacle, however, I was there on one of remaining 165 days. 🙂 A bright blue sky with a light breeze accompanied me on my round trip by Milford Sound, one of the main attractions of New Zealand.

The small Mitre Peak, named after one of the mountains in the sound, does not drive to the underwater observatory. Instead it’s the only excursion boat moving far out to sea, where dolphins jump out from the blue water and turn in the air their pirouettes.

Ich gebe den Reiseführern Recht. Richtig erleben kann man den Milford Sound am besten auf dem Wasser. Doch auch vom Ufer aus ist der Sound wunderschön. Und der sonnige Tag hatte auch viel Gutes: Von den Sandflies, der „schwarzen Pest“ der Westküste und des Fjordlands, blieb ich zum Glück verschont.

The guidebooks are right: The best way to experience the Milford Sound is from the water. But even from the shore the Sound ist beautiful. And the sunny day also had a lot of good: From the sandflies, the „black plague“ of the West Coast and Fiordland, I was luckily spared.
